Samman, Gada

Gada al-Samman ( Arabic. غادة السمان , p. 1942) is a Syrian writer, journalist, journalist, poetess, publisher, one of the most famous Syrian prose writers in the world [2] .

Biography

Gada al-Samman was born in Damascus , in an intelligent family, received her secondary education in a damask French lyceum [3] . She studied English literature at Damascus University , then continued her education at the American University of Beirut . The dissertation, material for which as-Samman collected in London and other European cities, was devoted to English literature [4] . In 1964, she returned to Damascus and began teaching at Damascus University , whose rector at that time was her father Ahmad as-Samman [5] . Received her doctorate at Cairo University [6] .

Creativity

Gada al-Samman is the author of several collections of poems, 6 collections of short stories, 5 novels, and a number of books of a journalistic and memoir character [7] . The first book of Gada al-Samman, “Your eyes are my destiny”, was published in Beirut in 1962, and brought her fame in the literary circles of Syria and Lebanon . True popularity (9 reprints) came to this book of hers after Gada herself became famous. In 1975, she published her masterpiece Beirut'75, a novel that, "according to critics and readers, seemed to predict the events of the Lebanese war of 1975 - 1990. " [8] . A year later, she published the book Beirut Nightmares, dedicated to the horrors of the Civil War that Gada herself witnessed. By the 1980s, al-Samman was already considered one of the best contemporary writers in the Arab world, by the 1990s, her works began to appear in English and French translations [9] .
