Biography
Mariam Baouardi was born in Ibilin in the Galilee on January 5, 1846 in a family of Greek Catholics ( Melkites ) Giries and Mariam Baouardi. At 3 years old, she lost both parents. Nephews (Mariam had a brother) was taken to his paternal uncle. A few years later he moved with them to Alexandria in Egypt . Mariam did not receive primary education and was illiterate until the end of her life. At age 13, she refused the proposal to marry and announced her monastic vocation.
The next few years, Mariam worked as a servant in the homes of Jerusalem , Alexandria , Beirut and Marseille . In Marseilles at the beginning of Lent in 1865, she joined the congregation of Sisters of Compassionate Women (compassionists), but after two months she left the monastery due to illness. Then she was accepted into the congregation of the Sisters of the Apparition of the Angel to St. Joseph . However, upon completion of the postulate, Mariam realized that she had a vocation for the contemplative type of monasticism.
March 29, 1867 she had the first stigmata. In June of that year, she entered the Barefoot Carmelite Monastery in Pau in France .
In August 1870, when she was still in novice , she was sent to India to establish a barefoot Carmelite monastery in Mangalore . On November 21, 1871, she took monastic vows and adopted the new name of Mary the Crucified Jesus. A year later, she was returned to Poe, from where in August 1875, together with other nuns, she was sent to Bethlehem to establish the first barefoot Carmelite monastery in Palestine . Her name is associated with the identification of the holy place of Emmaus (Nikopol) in the Holy Land.
