History

Oval hall

Peter Taylor van der Hulst ( 1702-1778 ), a manufacturer and banker of Scottish origin, once lived in the building, which is now set aside for the museum. Being a supporter of the Enlightenment, he showed great interest in the development of science and art. He bequeathed his entire collection and state to the Taylor Society, one of whose goals was to promote science and the arts.

Taylor's legacy was divided into three parts: religious, scientific, and art (the governing organizations were known as the first, second, and third societies). Each society had 5 guardians who were required to meet once a week (and, therefore, they all lived in Haarlem).

Collection

The museum contains paintings and drawings, including works by Michelangelo , Raphael , Rembrandt , Goltzius and Lorrain . The Teiler Museum holds almost all of Rembrandt's etchings [2] . There is also a unique collection of fossils (including the first Archeopteryx ), scientific (physical) tools, minerals, medals and coins [3] .

The library of the museum, built in 1826, contains a historical collection of natural science books and magazines of the 18th and 19th centuries.

The museum has 12 exhibition halls. About 100,000 people visit it annually.

The museum is a member of the European Botanical and Horticultural Libraries Group (EBHL).

In 2011, the museum was nominated for UNESCO Cultural Heritage Status [4] .

Next to the museum is the Taylor Courtyard , also named after Peter Tayler and designed by the same architect that worked on the most stylish part of the museum - the Oval Hall.

The museum has its own observatory.
