Surits, Elizaveta Yakovlevna

Born in the family of the famous Soviet diplomat Yakov Zakharovich Suritsa . In 1949 she graduated from the theater department of GITIS .

In the 1950s, she worked freelance at the A. Bakhrushin State Central Theater Museum . In 1959-1964 - senior editor of the Central Theater Library (Moscow). Since 1964 - a researcher, since 1989 - a leading researcher at the All-Union Scientific Research Institute of Art Studies (now the State Institute of Art Studies).

From the beginning of the 1950s he appeared in print - until the end of the 1960s as a ballet critic, later - as a ballet historian. He specializes in the history of Russian ballet abroad, the history of US ballet, the history of Moscow ballet of the 19th-20th centuries, the history of ballet and the studio movement in Russia in the 1920s.

Author of numerous articles and editor of encyclopedic publications: Theater Encyclopedia (1961-1967), Great Soviet Encyclopedia (1969-1978), Encyclopedias Ballet (1980) and Russian Ballet (1997), New Russian Encyclopedia (since 2003), Bolshoi Russian encyclopedia (since 2004), "Encyclopedia of the Bolshoi Theater" (the release was planned in 2011).

Consultant and author of the English dictionary “International Dictionary of Dance” (1993), the French ballet dictionary of the publishing house Larousse (1996 and 2008), the American “Dance Encyclopedia” (1998), the directory “World Ballet and Dance”, published in London in the 1990s years. Also published in the American magazines Ballet Theater and Ballet Revue. Member of the editorial board of the Russian magazine Ballet and the American Dance Chronicle.
