MP 59

MP 59 - Parisian subway cars, operating since 1960. They were created in 1959. This type of carriage has become one of the most popular in the Paris metro. A total of 600 wagons were built. Since 2000, the decommissioning of trains began. As of December 21, 2012, there were 24 upgraded MP 59 trains in operation, all on line 11. It was planned that by 2014 all trains would be finally withdrawn from the Paris Metro fleet, but their service life was extended to 2019 [1] .

Prerequisites for the creation

After the successful introduction of MP 55 type wagons, which increased the capacity of Line 11 by 5.5%, RATP decided to study the use of rolling stock with rubber tires on other lines. It was decided first of all to convert Line 1 as the busiest in the system, and then Line 4 .

Description

In general, the MP 59 wagons are similar to the MP 55, but there are several significant differences: more powerful traction engines (100 kW versus 67 kW), and a wide, solid windshield, providing a better view of the track. Improvements also affected mechanical equipment. Initially, trains on Line 1 consisted of five cars, since the stations did not accommodate six-car trains. In 1962-1963, the stations were lengthened, and the sixth car was seized in the trains. On Line 4, all platforms were already extended by the start of the MP 59 in 1967.

Each train consisted of four second-class cars, one first-class car and one mixed. The first class cars were painted yellow and the second class cars blue. In 1980, mixed-class cars were converted into the second class by removing the partition in the passenger compartment.

Operation

In 1974, eight additional trains were ordered to increase pairing on Lines 1 and 4, as a result of which the number of trains on each line reached 50-52. Also at this time, an experimental train of the MP 59DK type was built, on which many improvements were tested, later applied on the MF 77 and MP 89 type wagons. This composition worked on Line 4 until 1979, and then on Line 1 until 1985. After that, the experimental composition was repaired with the conversion to serial type. After that, he continued to work on Line 1 or 4.

In 1986-1990, in the salons of one of the compositions of MP 59, television sets that showed television programs and advertisements worked in an experimental manner. Also, some stations of Lines 1 and 4 were equipped with television screens as part of the same experiment. The experiment was unsuccessful, and the TVs were dismantled in 1990.

Between 1989 and 1992, the MP 59 trains on Line 1 were modernized in preparation for the extension of the line to La Defense . Most of the rolling stock of Line 4 has also been modernized. However, part of the trains on Line 4 due to excessive wear and tear did not undergo modernization and were decommissioned, including the trains of the 1974 release that contained defects in the mechanical equipment.

First, the bodies of the modernized cars for Line 1 were painted completely white, and the doors were dark blue, white seats were installed in the salons. However, it soon turned out that such a coloring scheme greatly contributed to vandalism, so the RATP refused it. In 1993, RATP introduced a white-green color scheme, and it was used for all formulations.

The trains on Line 11 are formed of four cars, not six, as on Lines 1 and 4. Although all of its platforms are 75 meters long enough for a five-car train, the Victoria Depot (located near Chatelet ) is not large enough to accommodate five-car trains.

Decommissioning

In 1995, with the arrival of trains of the MP 89 type on Line 1, many MP 59 trains were either transferred to other lines or decommissioned. The 24 refurbished MP 59 trains were transferred to line 11 to replace the retired MP 55 trains, which had reached the end of their service life by the mid-1990s. Others were sent to Line 4 to replace deductible trains. Some MP 59 trains were left as donors of spare parts for Line 11 trains, other upgraded trains were stored as a reserve for Lines 4 and 11, and the rest were decommissioned.

The number 047 was decommissioned in 2007 after a fire at the Simplon station, the number 044 was decommissioned for unknown reasons. As a result, 48 trains remained on line 4.

With the arrival of MP 05 automated trains on line 1, the remaining 48 MP 59 trains on Line 4 were replaced by the released MP 89 CC (same as before on Line 1). The first train MP 89 CC (No. 01) arrived on Line 4 in April 2011 and began operating on May 23, 2011. The first on Line 4 was decommissioned as MP 59 No. 6049 in April 2011, and the last as No. 6021 on December 21, 2012.

Initially, it was assumed that some trains would be transferred to line 11 to increase pairing, but these plans were not implemented.

Although there are currently no official plans to replace the MP 59 with Line 11, STIF announced plans to eventually replace them with the MP 14 , a new type of rolling stock with rubber tires. This type will be delivered to line 14 in an eight-car version with automatic control. It is possible that for Line 11, a manual version consisting of five cars can be developed, and in the future it will go to Line 6 to replace trains of the MP 73 type.
