Biography
Maria Barba was born on January 16, 1884 in Catanzaro in Italy in the family of Pietro Barba and Giovanna Floren. Two years after the birth of the daughter, the parents returned to their homeland in Palermo in Sicily .
In Palermo, Maria received her primary education at the College di María al Giuzino, and at the age of 14, she completed elementary courses and three junior master courses, after which she was forced to interrupt her studies by the will of her parents.
In June 1899, during a prayer in front of the image of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, she felt a vocation for monastic life - later this event was called by Mary her “transformation”. On July 2 of the same year, being present at the monastic tonsure of one of her cousins, she made the final decision to enter the monastery. However, due to the position of relatives, the implementation of her vocation, Mary waited almost another twenty years.
On September 25, 1919, she entered the Barefoot Carmelite Monastery in Ragusa and on April 16, 1920, she took monastic vestments, taking the new name of the sister of Mary Candida Eucharist. At the end of the novitiate on April 17, 1921, she brought temporary, and on April 23, 1924, eternal monastic vows.
On November 10, 1924, she was elected to the abbess of the monastery. With a brief break, during which she carried obedience to sacristy and novice mentors, Maria Candida remained abbess until 1947 . Maria described the mystical experience in detail in her writings.
During her ministry, Mary Candida contributed to the development of the Order of the Barefoot Carmelites in Sicily, establishing another monastery in Syracuse and returning the male branch of the order to the island.
Maria Candida died on June 12, 1949 on the feast of the Holy Trinity.
