History
In 1179, Liller, owned by the Counts of Flanders, was transferred as a ransom to the king of France, Philip II Augustus . In 1327, King Louis IX created the county of Artois , which included Liller. In 1542, during the war with Emperor Charles V, French troops burned Liller. Only three years later, the residents of the city managed to partially rebuild their homes.
After nearly a century of peaceful life, Liller suffered during the Thirty Years War . In 1637, the Spaniards captured the city and held for two years before the French managed to recapture it. In 1659, France and Spain concluded the Iberian Peace , under which the lands of Artois passed to France.
In 1710, Artois became the scene of the War of the Spanish Succession . Liller was occupied by Spanish troops. The Duke of Marlborough, commander of the allied forces of England, Germany and Holland, made him his headquarters until he was driven out of the city by the French. The Utrecht peace of 1713, which put an end to this war, preserved Liller as part of France.
