History

The creation of the university is closely connected with the development of Leeds as a center of textile and industrial production in the Victorian era. Until the 19th century , there were four universities in England: Oxford , Cambridge , London and Durham . In addition to geographical restrictions, these universities were open only to members of the Church of England . In response, in Leeds, as well as Birmingham , Liverpool and Manchester , higher institutions appeared, located in industrial areas and free from confessional restrictions.

In 1831 , the School of Medicine was opened in Leeds. Then, in 1874 , the Yorkshire College of Science appeared, which taught experimental physics, mathematics, geology, mining, chemistry, including the chemistry of dyes (a subject significant for the center of textile production). In 1887, the College was merged with the School of Medicine. The following year ( 1888 ), Yorkshire College joined Queen Victoria Federal University together with similar institutions in Liverpool and Manchester. In 1904, by order of King Edward VIII, the Leeds branch was transformed into the Leeds University itself.
