Sur district is an administrative-territorial unit ( district ) and a municipality ( municipal district ) in the north-west of the Ulyanovsk region of Russia .

The administrative center is the working village of Surskoye .
Geography
The area of the Sur district is 1688.0 km², which is about 4.5% of the entire territory of the region.
One of the largest Volga tributaries, the Sura River, flows through the territory of the district.
History
Sursky district was formed in 1928 and was called the Promzinsky district, and became part of the Ulyanovsk district of the Middle Volga region .
On July 28, 1930, the Ulyanovsk District was abolished, and all areas were directly subordinated to the Middle Volga Region.
On February 21, 1931, the village of Promzino was renamed Surskoye, and the district was renamed Sursky and the Astradamsky district was added to it.
On February 5, 1935, with the new regionalization of the Kuibyshev Territory , a number of village councils were allocated from the district to the Karsun and Tagai districts .
In October 1939, the Astradam district was re-allocated from the Sursky district as part of the Kuibyshev region .
January 19, 1943 the district became part of the newly formed Ulyanovsk region .
On October 22, 1960, part of the territory of the abolished Astradam district was transferred to the Sura district.
Surskiy
The center of the Sur district is the urban-type village of Surskoe, called the village of Promzino and belonging to the Alatyr district of the Simbirsk province . The village of Promzino was founded in 1552 , before Simbirsk , and has the right to be called one of the oldest settlements in the Ulyanovsk region.
The village of Promzino got its name in honor of the small river Promza, and under Soviet rule the village was renamed “Surskoye” - in honor of the Sura River.

Economics
In the Sur district, agricultural land covers an area of 59.1 thousand ha.
Agriculture specializes in the cultivation of grain, fodder and industrial crops, vegetable growing, cattle breeding in the dairy and meat sector, sheep and pig farming.
There are 123 large and medium industrial enterprises in the region.

- In childhood and youth, an outstanding ornithologist and hunting expert Sergey Alexandrovich Buturlin lived in Sursky.
- Ilya Nikolayevich Ulyanov , who visited the village of Promzino more than once, opened a two-year school in it, the building of which now houses the Sur Museum of History and Local Lore.
- Hero of the Soviet Union Ivan Stepanovich Yufimov was born in the village of Siresi.
- In the village of Lava (Sur district) Heroes of the Soviet Union were born: Khazov V.P. and Kukushkin S.A.
- In the village of Sarah, Belov, Grigory Andreyevich, was born.
Attractions
- In Sursky there is Nikolskaya Gora, a rather high hill on the left bank of the Sura , on which there is a chapel. Thousands of religious people every year try to get to the top of this mountain from the side of a steep slope, believing in the belief that whoever climbs the mountain will take away many sins.
- On the territory of the district is the state republican zoological beaver-musk reserve.
- In Sursky, in the building of a two-year school, opened by Ilya Ulyanov , the Sur Museum of History and Local Lore is located.
