Biography
Stepan Petrovich Gorbunov was born on August 17, 1902 in the village of Ekaterinink, Verkhotursky district, Perm province of the Russian Empire (now the village of Ivdelsky city district of the Sverdlovsk region of the Russian Federation ) in a family of gold mining workers. Since August 15, 1941 - at the front. He fought as a sapper in the engineering units of the 29th Army of the Western and Kalinin [1] fronts. His unit was one of the best in the battalion. During the construction of defensive fortifications, the fighters of Gorbunov always complied with the daily norms of 150-180%. Stepan Petrovich always knew how to arrange people in such a way that, under constant shelling, the squad carried out combat missions on time and without loss of personnel. During offensive operations, Gorbunov’s sappers quickly eliminated the enemy’s engineering barriers, providing advancement of the rifle and tank units of the army. Stepan Petrovich distinguished himself in the battle for the village of Gridino in June 1942. During a tank attack on a settlement, the Germans fierce mortar and machine gun fire, trying to cut off the infantry from the tanks. When they managed to force the infantry to lie down, Junior Sergeant Gorbunov, by personal example, raised the soldiers to attack. Later, with his detachment, Stepan Petrovich in the conditions of constant artillery shelling and bombing from the air in a short time restored bridges across the Volga and Vazuzu , which were of great importance for the supply of army units. On August 31, 1942, the 29th Army was transferred to the Western Front and took up defensive positions on the left bank of the Volga, which it held until February 1943.
On February 3, 1943, the 29th Army was withdrawn to the reserve of the Headquarters of the Supreme High Command and reorganized into the 1st Panzer Army , and the battalion, in which sergeant S.P. Gorbunov served, was in turn reorganized into the 71st separate motorized engineering battalion . On February 15, 1943, the army was included in the special group of General M.S. Khozin , in which it operated until March 12, after which it was withdrawn to the reserve. Since April 1943, Sergeant S.P. Gorbunov on the Voronezh Front . During the Battle of Kursk that began in the summer of 1943, the battalion, in which Sergeant Gorbunov served, provided engineering support to the 112th Tank Brigade. As part of his battalion, S.P. Gorbunov returned to the front on November 10, 1943 with the rank of senior sergeant. On July 18, 1944, during the construction of a bridge over the Western Bug River in the vicinity of the village of Dobryachin, Sokalsky District, Lviv Region, under enemy fire, Stepan Petrovich together with the department established bridge runs, exceeding the daily rate by 300%. Subsequently, Stepan Petrovich as part of his unit fought on the 1st Belorussian Front . He participated in the Warsaw-Poznan , East Pomeranian and Berlin operations. He completed the battle path in Berlin . Demobilized from the army on May 15, 1945 with the rank of foreman, he returned to the Urals. He worked as an instructor in the Ivdel city committee of the CPSU . He lived for some time in Sverdlovsk , then returned to Ivdel . December 15, 1969 Stepan Petrovich died. He was buried in the city of Ivdel, Sverdlovsk region.
