History

The main task of the archival commission was the analysis of provincial archives, the study and description of ancient monuments, the collection of biographical information about the figures of the Vladimir region. The initiators of the creation of the Vladimir Academic Archival Commission were Alexander Vasilyevich Smirnov and Alexei Vasilyevich Selivanov . A.V. Selivanov in 1884 became the founder of the Ryazan Scientific Archival Commission ; in Vladimir, he wrote the Charter of the new organization, donated books to the commission’s library, became its de facto first leader (he was a fellow chairman).

The first general meeting and opening of the Vladimir Provincial Scientific Archival Commission took place in the governor's house ( Bolshaya Moskovskaya Street , 62). Further work of the commission took place in the premises of the provincial government offices, and a small room at the Golden Gate was allocated for the museum collection and historical archive. It was decided to build a special building for the museum and the archival commission in early 1900; a competition was announced in which the project of architect P.G. Begen won . The building was laid down on May 29, 1900, built in 1903, the museum was opened only in 1906; the museum was located on the second floor, and the historical archive and library on the first. The facades of the building are generously decorated with various decorative elements of ancient Russian architecture; on the roof there are four dormers (along the main facade) and a pediment with figured completion from the side of the main entrance and a brick on the pediment: “1900, VAK” [1] .
