Illinois Senate

The Illinois Senate ( born Illinois Senate ) is the upper house of the Illinois General Assembly , the legislative branch of state government. Formed in the first constitution of Illinois , adopted in 1818 .

The senate consists of 59 senators, one from each constituency . Senators are elected by popular vote. The state constitution, adopted in 1970, divides all members of the Senate into three groups, with each group having one two year term and two four year olds in the decade between population censuses. This allows the next election to update the Senate by about 1/3 or 2/3, but not completely. The exact opposite is the Illinois House of Representatives , where all 118 members are re-elected every two years ^[1] .

The Illinois Senate sits in the state capitol in Springfield . The first official working day falls on the second Wednesday of January of the new year. His responsibilities include passing bills , approving state budgets, confirming appointments to senior positions in state departments, processing federal constitutional amendments, and proposing changes to the Illinois constitution. The Senate has the authority to abolish the governor’s veto, which requires 3/5 of the votes. Voting by members of the Senate is carried out by pressing one of the three buttons. It takes 30 votes to make a final decision on a specific vote.

In the current session of the Senate, members of the Democratic Party prevail ^[2] .
