History

The Pskov Theological Seminary was founded in 1732 on the initiative of the Archbishop of Pskov and Narva, Varlaam Lenitsky .

In 1738, a building was built specifically for the seminary near the farmstead of the Pskovo-Pechersky Monastery . In the 1770s, the building was rebuilt after a fire.

In the XIX century, to expand the premises of the seminary, Archbishop Eugene (Kazantsev) purchased a wooden house on a stone foundation at the expense of the seminary.

In 1840, the question of building a new building again arose. Construction of a new two-story building was carried out on the site of a former building. The building housed spacious light classrooms, well adapted for classes. In the central part of the building there was a house church. At the beginning of the XX century. according to the project of Petersburg architect A. Pavlovsky, the old and new buildings were combined. When rebuilding the building in 1901-1904. Architect A. Pavlovsky overbuilt the building with the volume of the home church in the name of the Three Hierarchs with a domed completion ( two-light hall ).

In 1918, the Pskov Theological Seminary was closed.

The building of the seminary is under protection as a monument of federal significance (Presidential Decree No. 176 of February 20, 1995). Currently, the building houses the natural-geographical faculty of Pskov State University .

On December 5, 2018, the Bishops' Council of the Pskov Metropolis decided: “recognize the particular importance and relevance of opening a theological seminary in the Pskov Metropolis. Instruct Metropolitan Tikhon to apply for the appropriate blessing to His Holiness Patriarch Kirill, prepare all the necessary documents for the opening of the seminary and have care about the building, financing and provision of teaching staff of a higher spiritual Orthodox educational institution for the Pskov Metropolitan [1] .
