Life and creativity
Louis de Sylvester was the youngest son of the court painter and engraver of the French king Louis XIV Israel Sylvester . The first art teacher for Louis was his father. Later, he was already a young man, engaged in the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture by Charles Lebrun and Bon Boulogne the Elder . While still working under their leadership, he became a good draftsman, and then cultivated in Italy, using the advice of Carlo Maratti . Upon returning to Paris, in 1702 the local Royal Academy of Painting presented the mythological picture “The Creation of Man” (now in the Museum of Montpellier) and was accepted as a member of this institution, and later (1706) was elected professor.
In 1712, Louis de Sylvester was appointed rector of the Royal Academy in Paris. In 1716 he came at the invitation of the King of Saxony and Poland Augustus the Strong to Dresden, where he then lives and works for more than 30 years. In Saxony, Louis de Sylvester becomes the chief artist of the Court and is elevated to a noble status. In addition to numerous portraits, he creates decorative ornaments for a number of Dresden palaces and various Zwinger salons. In 1727, Louis de Sylvester became director of the Dresden Academy of Arts .
After returning to Paris in 1752, he received the post of rector of the Academy of Painting and held this position until the end of his life.
