Biography
Angel was born in Jerusalem in 1185 to a Jewish family. Together with his twin brother, he converted to Christianity and retired to Mount Carmel , where he accepted the spiritual leadership of local hermits. At the same time, Albert Avogadro - the Latin patriarch of Jerusalem - wrote the Charter of the Order of the Carmelites , which allowed them to establish monasteries around the world.
The angel, elevated to the priesthood at the age of 25, went to many places in Palestine , preaching and performing miracles. Returning to Mount Carmel, he spent a long time in the gate.
In 1218, the abbots sent him to Rome to submit to the Pope the Statutes approved by the first General Director of the Carmelites, Saint Brocard . After that, the Angel was sent by the leadership of the Order to Sicily to preach against the heresy of the Cathars .
In Licata, the local landowner, a certain Berengaria, being a heretic , lived in prodigal cohabitation. The angel convinced his companion to repent and stop fornication . The enraged landowner burst into the Church of Saints Philip and Jacob with a weapon, at the time when the Angel preached in it and dealt him death blows with a saber. Four days later - May 5, 1225 - Angel Carmelitus died, demanding forgiveness from the inhabitants of Likata for his murderer.
Glorification
The veneration of the martyr in the Order of the Carmelites began immediately after his death. It was officially established in the church by Pope Pius II in 1456 .
Liturgical memory is celebrated on May 5th .
