General information

Faculty of Physics, Ural State University A. Gorky was founded in 1931 in the city of Sverdlovsk (now Yekaterinburg ) and was originally called the Physics and Mathematics Faculty of Ural University [1] . During the Great Patriotic War (WWII), the faculty graduated physicists and mathematicians of various specialties for the defense industry, education and science of the USSR . Hundreds of students and teachers of the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics went to the front.

During these years, the academician of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR V.I. Arkharov taught the academician of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR S.V. Vonsovsky [2] .

After the Second World War, professors A.K. Kikoin , A.A. Berdyshev , V. Ya. Kobelev , associate professor A.F. Gerasimov , corresponding members of the Russian Academy of Sciences Ya.S. Shur , E.A. Turov , M.N. Mikheev , Professor V.N. Konev .

Since the 70s, the best of its graduates have joined the ranks of teachers of the Faculty of Physics - professors Yu. A. Izyumov (later became an academician of the RAS), G. S. Kandaurov , V. V. Zverev , K. A. Barkhatov , and later - professors P. E. Suetin (was rector of Ural State University in 1976-1993), academician B. V. Litvinov , professors A. A. Kazakov , B. Kh. Ishmukhametov , A. N. Babushkin , E. A. Pamyatnykh , M. I. Katznelson , Academician M. V. Sadovsky [3] .

In May 2011, the Faculty of Physics of USU became part of the Institute of Natural Sciences and Mathematics of Ural Federal University named after B.N. Yeltsin in connection with the reorganization of the Ural State University and its entry into the Ural Federal University. [4] .

Faculty Structure

Currently (May 2012) the following departments are successfully working at the Faculty of Physics:
