Norwegian Polar Institute ( Norwegian Norsk Polarinstitutt ) is the national polar research institution in Norway . It was launched with the assistance of the Norwegian Ministry of the Environment. The Institute organizes expeditions to the Arctic and Antarctic and carries out research work at the station in Ny-Ålesund . Its offices are located in Tromsø and Svalbard , as well as on Queen Maud Land ; the staff is approximately 150 people. The Institute is responsible for concluding international treaties of Norway regarding the Arctic and Antarctic.
The institute was founded in 1928 by Adolf Gül under the name Norges Svalbard-og Ishavsundersøkelser .
