Hero of Belarus ( 2006 ). People's Artist of the USSR ( 1978 ). Academician of the Academy of Arts of the USSR ( 1983 ; corresponding member 1973 ). Laureate of the USSR State Prize ( 1973 ), two State Prizes of the Byelorussian SSR ( 1970 , 1980 ), State Prize of the Republic of Belarus ( 1996 ).

Biography
Born in the village of Zvenyachi, Tolochinsky district, Vitebsk region, BSSR . His youth coincided with the years of World War II . At the age of twenty, he participated in the battles for Sevastopol . Almost at the very beginning of the war he was captured, was in the concentration camps of Dusseldorf , Buchenwald and Dachau . On April 29, 1945, he was liberated from the Dachau concentration camp by American troops [2] .
He received his art education after being demobilized from the army. In 1951 he graduated from the Minsk Art College , then studied at the Moscow Art Institute. V.I. Surikov (with D. Mochalsky), who graduated in 1957.
He was not a member of the CPSU [3] .
He lived and worked in Minsk. He was the head of the state cultural institution "Creative academic workshops of painting, graphics and sculpture." In 1988, he was a member of the State Commission for the Investigation of Soviet Crimes in Kurapaty [4] . People's Deputy of the USSR in 1989-1991 (from the Cultural Foundation).
Recently, he was seriously ill, suffered an extensive stroke. He died in the 90th year of life on November 8, 2010 [5] . He was buried in the Eastern cemetery of Minsk.
The memory of Mikhail Savitsky was dedicated to his personal exhibition by an artist from Lithuania Anatoly Stishko , who considers himself a student and friend of the Belarusian master [6] [7] .
He was awarded the Order of Francis Skorina (1997), became his first gentleman. He was a member of the International Slavic Academy.
Creativity
Savitsky was characterized by a journalistic and emotionally expressive disclosure of historical and contemporary themes (Song, 1957; cycles Heroic Belarus, 1967, Figures on the Heart (1974-1979) (which are based on memories and impressions of cruelty in German concentration camps [2] ); paintings " Partisan Madonna ", "The Legend of Old Man Minai", "Children of War", etc.). All these canvases are dedicated to the memory of those who died during the Great Patriotic War. They also praise the patriotism of Soviet people [2] .
The painting "Summer Theater" caused a scandal in the media [2] [8] . According to the author himself:
| Among the 13 works that I presented at the exhibition at the Palace of Arts in Minsk in 1980, there was one entitled “Summer Theater”. So the Nazis, whose humor was peculiar and cynical, called the destruction after execution in open pits of the corpses of their victims. ... In the picture on both sides of the bulldozer, which rakes into a pit to burn the bodies of those killed and tortured, I painted two black figures. On the one hand, this is an SS man with a gun, on the other, a prisoner with a star of David on his chest. A great scandal erupted over this second figure. According to some hotheads, it turned out that I had offended all Jews with this painting. But I knew what I was writing. After all, it is a fact that among the intragalber authorities, the same cruel kapos , as well as in the Sonderkommandas that burned the corpses, there were many Jews . I was told that this is a lie. I stood my ground. Then the Minister of Culture was hastily sent to one of the extermination camps in Poland. They showed him the documents, confirmed that yes, the way it was. Nevertheless, the scandal grew. They demanded to remove, if not the picture itself, then the sign from the prisoner's chest. I said: I will not clean anything. I write what I saw with my own eyes, I write about relationships between people, as well as that cruel time, which, no matter how you now would like, was not unambiguous. |
Together with individual paintings, he created the artistic cycles “Partisan Belarus” (1960-1980s), “Figures on the Heart” (1974-1987), “Black Real Life” (1988-1989), “Commandments of Bliss” (1990s) ), “XX Century” (1990-2000s) [8] . Many of his early works were not preserved [8] . Among the prominent paintings are also: Partisans (1963), Requiem (1988), etc. [8] . "Partisan Madonna" was awarded the silver medal of the USSR Academy of Arts [8] . As K. Melnik notes, “Savitsky’s Christian motifs appeared rather early,” later “he sounded in full force in his art” [8] .
