The first "Book of Songs" was published in the 1827th year. It consisted of poems, most of which had already appeared in print earlier.

In the “Book of Songs”, on which Heine worked for 10 years, the process of development of the poet’s consciousness, the formation of his creative method, enrichment and individualization of his lyrical palette was reflected. Drawing on the most vital traditions of early romanticism associated with folklore and lyrics by Burger and Goethe, Heine retains the foundations of a romantic worldview in the “Book of Songs”. For him, one of the fundamental romantic principles remains in force - the antithesis of "I" and "not - I". Everything that lies outside the poet’s self (or a lyrical hero close to him), including social contradictions of reality, which Heine sought to exclude from Hein’s romantic vision, is revealed and evaluated in the book of songs through a relatively narrow aspect of subjective individual perception. Love is the fundamental principle of being for the author of the “Book of Songs,” but he interprets this fundamental principle not so much with the general philosophical as in the individually-eventual, subjective-romantic plane.

At the same time, Heine introduced completely new elements into the romantic lyrics: he expanded the creative range of poetry, and in a new way tried to interpret the themes traditional for romantics (love, nature). The poet’s artistic style itself allows one to find a rather clearly expressed realistic plan in the “Book of Songs”. In other words, at the very beginning of his work, Heine reflected the process of the movement of German literature from romanticism to realism.

"Book of Songs"

The hero of the “Book of Songs” is autobiographical; he, like Heine, in love with his cousin Amalia, suffers from unhappy love. The theme of love pervades the entire collection, it is shown by the author not only in the general philosophical, but also in the subjective-romantic, private aspect.

Unrequited love in Heine's interpretation translates into a protest against the surrounding reality. The romantic hero, he is disappointed, suffers from melancholy, painfully experiences contradictions of reality, the romantic principle-antithesis of “I” and “not - I” is in effect, the romantic attitude is preserved. The gamut of transmitted feelings of the lyrical hero is so great that Heine combined the verses written over 10 years in one cycle.

The collection preserves the life traditions of early romanticism associated with the popular beginning of G.A. Burger and I.V. Goethe , romantic typification, but it already reveals a movement from romanticism to realism (a new interpretation of the theme of love, a wider creative circle of poetry).
