Getting

  • Heating in an arc furnace strontium phosphate with soot :
Sr3(POfour)2+8C→>1000oCSr3P2+8CO{\ displaystyle {\ mathsf {Sr_ {3} (PO_ {4}) _ {2} + 8C \ {\ xrightarrow {> 1000 ^ {o} C}} \ Sr_ {3} P_ {2} + 8CO}} }

Physical Properties

Strontium phosphide forms light brown crystals.

Thermally stable, melts at high temperature.

Chemical Properties

  • It decomposes with the release of phosphine :
Sr3P2+2H2O→3Sr(OH)2+2PH3↑{\ displaystyle {\ mathsf {Sr_ {3} P_ {2} + 2H_ {2} O \ {\ xrightarrow {\}} \ 3Sr (OH) _ {2} + 2PH_ {3} \ uparrow}}}
  • Reacts with acids:
Sr3P2+6HCl→3SrCl2+2PH3↑{\ displaystyle {\ mathsf {Sr_ {3} P_ {2} + 6HCl \ {\ xrightarrow {\}} \ 3SrCl_ {2} + 2PH_ {3} \ uparrow}}}
