Biography
Maria Skrilli was born in a wealthy and powerful family. In her adolescence, she suffered a serious illness, chained her to bed for two years. The girl attributed her healing to the intercession of the holy martyr Florence. After recovering, she felt a desire for a monastic vocation and on May 28, 1846 , overcoming resistance from her parents, entered the monastery of the bare Carmelite Santa Maria degli Angeli in Florence . In it, the holy Mary Magdalene , whose biography had a great influence on the spiritual formation of Mary, had once worked. During the two months she spent at the monastery, Mary Skrilli understood that the Lord required another ministry from her. The girl returned to Montevarchi, trying to understand God's plan for herself.
In 1852 she opened a small school for girls at home. Soon other girls joined her, and the school was recognized by secular authorities and Maria was appointed as its director. Maria Skrilli, working with children, saw the need to found a new monastic congregation dedicated exclusively to the education and upbringing of girls, especially in rural areas. October 15, 1854 in Fiesole, Maria Skrilli, having received the blessing of Bishop Francis Bronzuolli , along with three associates, took the monastic vestments of Carmelites and took the new name of Maria Theresa of Jesus, becoming the tertiary Carmelite . On May 27, 1855, the Grand Duke of Tuscany, Leopold II of Austria, approved the new congregation. Thus was the beginning of the Congregation of the Sisters of the Mother of God Carmel (CNCI).
Mary Teresa of Jesus was elected as superior to the congregation. The unification of Italy into a single state led to the growth of anticlericalism and the influence of Freemasonry, and in 1860 the new authorities banned the activities of the new monastic congregation. The community finally terminated its activity two years later.
Maria Theresa of Jesus moved to Florence on March 18, 1878 , where, with the blessing of Archbishop Eugene Chekkoni, she was able to restore the congregation. In Florence, she opened a school and boarding school for poor girls and continued her ministry in helping those in need.
Mary Teresa of Jesus died on November 14, 1889 in Florence.
