Martin Schulz ( German: Martin Schulz ; born December 20, 1955 , Eschweiler ) - German politician, member of the Social Democratic Party of Germany , in 1994-1995 he was a member of the Party of European Socialists , a member of the European Parliament since 1994. President of the European Parliament from January 17, 2012 [3] to January 17, 2017 [4] . From June 18 to July 1, 2014, Martin Schulz was the leader of the Socialist and Democratic faction in the European Parliament, and therefore resigned as president of the EP. On July 1, 2014, he was again elected President of the European Parliament [5] . In addition to German, Martin Schulz speaks five more languages: English, French, Italian, Spanish and Dutch [6] .

Biography
In 1974, Schultz joined the youth social democratic organization Jusos .
In 1977-1982 he worked in several publishing houses and bookstores. In 1982-1994 he was the owner of a bookstore.
In 1984, Martin Schulz became an adviser to the city of Würselen in North Rhine-Westphalia . In 1987-1998, he served as mayor in the same city.
In 1995, he became a member of the executive body of the Social Democratic Party of Germany in the Middle Rhine region, the next year he was elected party chairman in Aachen . In 1999 he became a member of the party’s federal government.
In 1994, he was elected to the European Parliament . In the subsequent elections (in 1999, 2004 and 2009) he was re-elected. As a coordinator, he worked in the Human Rights Sub-Commission at the Party of European Socialists in 1994-1996. Then, in 1996-2000, he performed the same functions in the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Internal Affairs. In 2000-2004, he was chairman of a group of German Social Democrats in the European Parliament. Since 2002 he became the first deputy chairman of the parliamentary group of socialists, in 2004 he became its chairman. Since 2009, he became chairman of the Party of European Socialists, and then a group of Social Democrats. On January 17, 2012, Martin Schulz replaced Jerzy Buzek as President of the European Parliament. On June 18, 2014, Martin Schulz was elected leader of the faction of socialists and democrats in the European Parliament, and therefore resigned as president of the European Parliament. On July 1, 2014, he was again elected President of the European Parliament.
On January 17, 2017, he resigned as President of the European Parliament and announced that he would fight for the post of Federal Chancellor in the elections in the fall of 2017. On March 19, 2017 at the SPD Congress, he was elected party chairman and nominated as the single candidate from the SPD for the post Federal Chancellor in the fall elections.
On February 13, 2018, Martin Schulz announced that he was leaving the post of head of the SPD [7] . Schultz proposed the appointment of Andrea Nales, leader of the Social Democrats in the Bundestag, as the head of the SPD. The party’s presidium held a meeting during which it was decided to appoint Nales as interim chairman of the Social Democratic Party of Germany. Earlier, Martin Schulz refused the post of head of the German Foreign Ministry [8] .
