Juan Botela Medina was born in 1941 in Mexico City. His father, Juan Bothella Asensi, was a Spanish politician from the Second Republic , and in 1933 he was even Spanish Minister of Justice for two months. As a result of the defeat of the Republicans in the civil war, he and his young wife Gloria Medina Igueras had to emigrate to Mexico.
Juan Bothella Medina at the age of 3 began to go to the pool, and at 5 years old - to jump from a springboard. Naturally, this was not without injuries, he happened to hit his head. His brother also engaged in diving, and his sister - swimming. In 1959, he won a bronze medal at the Pan American Games, and in 1960 at the Olympic Games in Rome, he won a bronze medal in ski jumping .
Sports injuries and constant overfatigue led to the fact that in 1970, Juan Bothella Medina died of hypertension while working on a dissertation.
