Elections to the UN Security Council were held on October 15, 2009 at 64 UN GA at UN Headquarters .
New non-permanent members of the UN Security Council for 2 years elected Gabon , Nigeria , Lebanon , Bosnia and Herzegovina and Brazil . They began their work in the Security Council on January 1, 2010 [1] .

Geographical distribution
In accordance with the rules of geographical distribution of non-permanent members of the Security Council, as well as established practice, the members were elected as follows: two from Africa, one from Asia, one from Latin America and the Caribbean, and two from Western Europe and other states.

The five elected members after the 2009 election were:
- Africa: Gabon and Nigeria replace Burkina Faso and Libya
- Asia: Lebanon replaced Vietnam
- Eastern Europe: Bosnia and Herzegovina replaced Croatia
- Latin America and the Caribbean: Brazil replaced Costa Rica
