Biography
Vladimir Paperny was born in Moscow in the family of a literary critic and literary parodist Zinovy Samoilovich Paperny ( 1919 - 1996 ); mother, Kaleria Nikolaevna Ozerova ( 1918 - 2012 ), was an employee of the Literary Newspaper , editor of the criticism department of the New World magazine . The younger sister, Tatyana Papernaya ( 1952 - 1978 ), like her brother, became the prototype of the character of Bella Akhmadulina ’s poem “Country Affair” .
Paperny graduated from the Faculty of Industrial Design of the Stroganov School [ when? ] 1969, then graduate school of the Central Research Institute of Theory and History of Architecture . His dissertation on the architecture of the Stalinist era in 1985 was published in the United States in Russian under the name "Culture Two" ARDIS, Ann Arbor, 1985. In 2000 he defended a dissertation at the Russian State Humanitarian University on the topic “Models for describing Soviet culture (based on Soviet architecture from the 1920s-1950s): Culture 2”) and received a candidate’s degree in cultural studies .
Since 1981, Paperny has been living in Los Angeles . He worked as art director and head of the advertising department at American corporations. He currently heads the design studio VPA [2] in Los Angeles, is engaged in the production of documentary television films. Author of articles on design, architecture, urban environments and cultural clashes, stories and memories. A consistent critic of the "Luzhkov architecture" in Moscow [3] .
About himself in a 2007 interview, he said:
I certainly do not feel like a scientist. I am a competent designer, but there is better. I can not call myself a writer - very little has been written. As a child, I often imagined myself as an actor, then a Suvorov , then a musician. Perhaps the childish desire to pretend to be someone preserved. When I wrote my dissertation, Culture Two, I pretended to be a scientist. When filming documentaries for TV, he pretended to be a filmmaker. In my youth, I did not come anywhere on time, did not want to do anything, everything quickly got bored. In Stroganovka began as a very bad student. I did not learn to draw before entering - this was another option of pretense. But by the 5th year something had happened: my sepia drawing was among the best works. The sculpture teacher, who had completely waved his hand at me, said that my last sculpture was very good. I got five for my diploma. The second turning point occurred when I was writing a dissertation - for the first time with passion I did something for 4 years. And then my departure to America. For me, life in Russia was a warm, viscous swamp, and living in America means swimming in the cold ocean. Stop floundering - go to the bottom [4] .
In 2011, he was a member of a group of developers based on the Skolkovo business school of the project in the field of national branding, Center of the Russian Avant-Garde . The project was not implemented. The group of developers, in addition to Vladimir Paperny, included Nikolai Palazhchenko , Marina Khrustalyova , Victoria Golembiovskaya , Nuna Alekyan and others.

Vladimir Paperny in literature
Vladimir Paperny and his sister Tatyana served as prototypes for the characters of Bella Akhmadulina ’s poem “Country Affair”. In the early 1970s. Paperny and his sister rented a dacha in Peredelkina from the widow of Pavel Luknitsky in the neighborhood of the dacha Akhmadulina. Akhmadulina didn’t have a phone, Papernykh had one, and several times a day she went to call them. "A kind of neighborly friendship arose." A year later, the cottage was taken from the widow of Luknitsky by the Literary Fund, which owned the cottage, and Paperny had to move out.
It became clear that friendship with Bella outside the summer neighborhood and the phone would not last long. And then the idea came to me to translate this friendship into an artistic and poetic genre. I decided to write a letter to Bella, demonstrating that I am an outstanding creative person. This letter is somewhere preserved in my archive. On the one hand, journalistic integrity requires that I reproduce it. On the other hand, I am ashamed: I recently re-read it and was horrified, it was pretentious, strained and absolutely mediocre. Fortunately, no decision was made: there was no letter in the folder where he was supposed to be. Apparently, some secret well-wisher destroyed him. <...> The answer came quickly. A poem by Akhmadulina, “Country Affair”, appeared in Literary Newspaper , in which both Tanya and I described my letter. The site indicated the wrong date of the poem - 1966 , in fact, the events took place around 1973 . All the basic facts are retold in the poem accurately enough, except for my letter. Firstly, Bella opoethized him, and secondly, made him a declaration of love (judging by the literary quality of my letter, it was not love, but rather a vain desire to make friends with a celebrity) [5] .
