According to the latest census, about 77.5 thousand people speak German in Australia , which is 0.4% of the total population of Australia . The German language for them is everyday, despite the knowledge of English .
Most representatives of the German-speaking population live, like most English-speaking people, in the largest cities of the country ( Melbourne , Sydney , Brisbane , Perth , Adelaide ). German speakers make up a large proportion of the total population of Adelaide (0.57%) and its suburbs (0.68%), in the Sunshine Coast (0.64%) and Gold Coast (0.52%), on the peninsula Cape York , including the humid tropics, Cairns with its environs (0.61%), and also partially in the border region between New South Wales and Victoria (0.52%), in Melbourne and along the coast of New South Wales. They also include those who speak German, but do not use it in spoken language .
The number of people of German descent in Australia is hypothetically larger: according to various estimates, it ranges from half a million to a million people, which, however, is much smaller than in the United States of America . Such estimates can well be explained by the fact that the Germans played a significant role in the history of the continent , in particular, in its settlement and research. The descendants of the Germans who moved here in the XIX - XX centuries , most often do not know their roots, therefore they do not consider themselves Germans.
