Biography
Victor Troegubov was born on July 16, 1960 in Moscow. In the second grade, parents gave their only son to a music school in piano.
In 1975, Victor (vocals, guitar, keyboards) assembled his first group, Monsters, who performed at school dances and performed hits of Western rock bands. In 1977, Troegubov graduated from high school number 159 and entered the Moscow Aviation Institute at the Faculty of Radio Electronics. On the first day of his studies, Victor met a fellow student Armen Grigoryan . They began to spend a lot of time in one company, but everyone was engaged in musical creativity in his own rock band. In 1981, Troegubov, as a backing vocalist and acoustic guitarist, joined Grigoryan's band “Atmospheric Pressure”, which performed cover versions of songs by Western and domestic rock bands.
The Early Years of the Crematorium Group (1983-87)
In 1982 - 83, a project for the creation of Russian-language songs was "ripened" between Armen and Victor. The first attempts to record Russian-language songs were made in the summer of 1983 in the studio of the Theater of the Soviet Army , but the associates recorded a full-length album " Vinus Memoirs " on January 5-9, 1984 in the studio of the Moscow Theater named after Mayakovsky . After long deliberation, the group was called the Crematorium.
In April 1984, with the help of two session musicians (violist Dmitry Pletnev and drummer of Atmospheric Pressure Alexander Sevastyanov), Grigoryan and Troegubov recorded the album Crematorium II , which most clearly represented the style of the early Crematorium and brought the group popularity. The author of music and lyrics 8 of 17 songs was Victor Troegubov, he also performed the main vocal parts in these songs. In those years, the mechanism for the distribution of amateur records was very developed. The albums of the Crematorium group quickly dispersed among students and among music lovers, many wanted to attend the group’s concerts.
Inspired by such interest, Grigoryan and Troegubov invite Sergey “Pushkin” Pushkarev (bass guitar, piano) and violinist Mikhail Rossovsky to collaborate. In the middle of summer 1984, Crematorium hosts two concerts in the apartment of its friend Dmitry Brodkin, who became the group’s first director. At the "apartment blocks" "Crematorium" offered the public a full hour and a half concert. Percussion parts in dynamic songs sounded from the rhythm box, Pushkarev played the bass guitar, Rossovsky played the violin and sometimes the bongs, Grigoryan played the acoustic guitar, recorder and sang, and Troegubov sang, played the electric guitar and harmonica. Soon, the "homeowners" became regular.
After the concert, on January 5, 1985, in the basement of the house of M. Bulgakov, the leaders of the “Crematorium” group were interrogated by an intelligence officer who informed Troegubov and Grigoryan that they should stop performing and recording their songs. However, the years 1986-87 brought reliefs: a rock club functioned in Leningrad, a rock laboratory was created in Moscow, and the Crematorium again intensified its activities.
The group was to develop, which was understood by all the musicians of the collective. There was a need to replace the rhythm box with a live drummer, and the involvement of other instrumentalists was discussed. The most controversial were the positions of the two founders of the group - both Grigoryan and Troegubov composed their own songs, and their understanding regarding the future fate and sound of these songs varied. Soon Troegubov left the group. For his part, Troegubov played several solo “apartment blocks”, on which violinist Mikhail Rossovsky helped him. However, at that moment Troegubov and Grigoryan were not yet ready for a final break, a reunion was taking place, and “Crematorium” recorded the album “ Illusory World ”. Fans of the group positively perceive the studio album, which they expected for two years.
In early 1987, “Crematorium” was first broadcast on the radio, and in March Soviet television first showed the song “Trash Wind”, for which a new phonogram was specially recorded, where all violin parts were performed by violinist Vadim Saralidze, who has a conservative education.
In June 1987, at the festival of the Moscow rock laboratory "Crematorium" and violinist Vadim Saralidze made a new program. Officially, Viktor left the team.
Smoke Group (1988-1991)
In the fall of 1987, Viktor Troegubov, Sergey Pushkarev, Vadim Saralidze and Andrei Murashov, calling themselves the group "Smoke" , begin to work on new songs of Troegubov. To the surprise of the critics, the art style of the new collective outlined an art rock roll that was absolutely unexpected for people from the Crematorium, although elements of completely different genres — hard rock and beat, rock and roll and even country — were used in the sound palette.
On April 26, 1988, the Smoke band played their first concert under a rhythm machine, after which drummer Alexander Solomatin was invited to join the band. In May, the collective made a demo recording “Test of Pen” at a rehearsal, which was stolen and soon began to be circulated in record kiosks. Since the demo included the songs “Greetings”, “You entered” and “It all ends” (recorded at the “Crematorium” concert in 1987), and recordings in those years were printed on reels and cassettes without covers, in many cities the phonogram “Sample Pen "Began to sell as a new album" Crematorium ".
“Smoke” gives a lot of concerts, becomes a laureate of the large-scale “Sound Track” contest of the Moskovsky Komsomolets newspaper, participates in several rock festivals. In 1989, the group recorded the studio album Sapienti sat (“It’s enough for the clever”), which is actively distributed in the form of a magnetic album (in early 1991 the album will be released as a long-playing record at the all-union record company “ Melody ” (on CD in 1993 “ SoLyd Records ").
Music critic Artem Lipatov managed to find an exact definition for this studio work:
... an unusual cocktail of classical orchestra musicians with representatives of the “cool” underground and led to the fact that it is now so difficult to determine the musical style of the group. Remaining integral and individual, this music incorporated elements of seemingly incompatible genres such as country beat and art, hard rock and chamber acoustics, flamenco and jazz. Apparently, this layering, coupled with the philosophical frankness of the lyrics, makes this album so interesting.
Return to the Crematorium (1991-94)
At the beginning of 1991, Victor Troegubov met with Armen Grigoryan. Grigoryan offered to give a joint acoustic apartment concert, after which Troegubov received an offer to take part in the presentation of the new crematorial album “Zombies”. Concerts and presentations took place in the Palace of Economics MPEI February 22 and 23, 1991. Immediately after the Zombie presentations, the Crematorium group left guitarist Viktor Osipov, after which Dyma guitarist Andrei Murashov was invited to join the group.
At the end of June, “Crematorium” took part in the Solovetsky Rock Forum (together with the groups “ Aquarium ”, “Trefoil”, “ Different people ”, etc.), all the proceeds from the concerts in Arkhangelsk and Severodvinsk went to the restoration fund of the Solovetsky monastery. Since July 1991, Troegubov began simultaneously with musical activity to act as director of the Crematorium group. In 1992, Victor became CEO of the officially registered joint-stock company “Crematorium”. Joint-stock company "Crematorium" will last two years. "Crematorium" is actively giving concerts; in late November and early December, it takes part in large-scale concerts at the Olimpiysky Sports Complex, dedicated to the anniversary of the Vid television company. An abridged version of the concert is broadcast on television. In December, the group travels with concerts in Siberia, visiting Omsk, Krasnoyarsk, Novosibirsk and Barnaul.
In 1991, “Crematorium” gave 53 concerts, and in 1992 - 57 concerts, which was an excellent indicator for that time. But I had to forget about recording a new studio album under such conditions. Only in 1993 did a company appear which offered the group financing of a studio recording and a CD release. “Crematorium” decides to record not a new album, but a collection of the best songs in the history of the group, because many albums were previously recorded at primitive studios and their phonograms were imperfect. “Crematorium” at that moment in time had a concert program of the very hits that had not yet been recorded in such versions. For the album, 21 well-known songs were selected from the already released albums “Crematoria” (among them Troegubov’s songs “Wine Memoirs” and “Dedication to an Ex-girlfriend”), two new songs were written specifically for this studio, in addition, the group recorded the hit “Rubbish” for the album » Mike Naumenko of the Zoo group (the main vocals were performed by Troegubov). Since 24 songs could not fit on one vinyl disc, the album was released on two discs and for this reason was called the “ Double Album ”. 24 songs were recorded and mixed in the sound studio of the Film Studio. Gorky. March 25-26, 1993, concerts, presentations of the "Double Album" took place in the capital's Palace of Culture. Gorbunov, and on April 3-4, similar events were held in St. Petersburg.
In the fall of 1993, Crematorium planned a large-scale concert of the band’s 10th anniversary. Already been booked on October 6 Hall DK them. Gorbunov, who was then the site for the capital's rock concerts, was ordered a multi-channel recording and film crew of the Rock and Roll TV program, tickets for the anniversary concert were actively distributed. However, on October 3 and 4, 1993, the Supreme Council of Russia was dispersed in Moscow. Viktor Troegubov, Armen Grigoryan and the new director of the Crematorium group Mikhail Orazov, together with Andrei Makarevich and Garik Sukachev, from the only television studio on Shabolovka that was operating at that time, called on fellow citizens to calm and mutual tolerance. As a result, October 5-7 were declared days of mourning, and the crematorium anniversary concert had to be postponed until October 14. On the appointed day, it was not possible to organize a multi-channel sound recording of the concert, but the concert itself took place, was successful and was recorded on video. The soundtrack of the concert was brought together by the television sound engineer in real time, that is, after the concert it was impossible to correct the mistakes made by the musicians and rewrite individual instruments.
In 1993, the Crematorium group took part in the filming of the full-length feature film " Tatsu " directed by Vyacheslav Logunov (later the film was also distributed under the name "Hounds Dogs"). And from a scenario point of view, and in terms of directing, the picture turned out to be very imperfect, as a result of which not only did not get into the rental, but also generally went unnoticed by cinematic circles. During the filming of the film, several video clips were mounted on the band’s famous hits (“Little Girl”, “The Hounds”, etc.). These videos became high-quality promotional materials for the team and were broadcast on television more than once.
In January 1994, in the studio of the Moscow Palace of Youth , the Crematorium group began recording the studio album Tango on the Cloud. When the work on recording the instrumental tracks and the main vocals of the album was finished, Troegubov was invited to the studio, where he sang backing vocals in the songs “Brother in Christ”, “Jeff - White Blood”, “Necrophilia” and “Quasimodo”. The last concert of Victor Troegubov as part of the Crematorium group was a performance on May 8, 1994 in Sverdlovsk. And on the night of May 9, a conflict took place on the train to Moscow, one of the sides of which was Armen Grigoryan, the other - Viktor Troegubov and group director Mikhail Orazov. Troegubov and Orazov left the Crematorium group.
The Smoke (1994-1997)
In April 1994, while formally still a member of the Crematorium group, Viktor Troegubov began looking for musicians for his new project.
However, as a listener Troegubov was very fond of “heavy” music - especially the works of “ Led Zeppelin ”, “ Black Sabbath ” and “ Ozzy Osbourne ”, “ Deep Purple ”, “ Slade ”, “ Atomic Rooster ”. Sometimes Victor composed “heavy” compositions, which could not be embodied within the framework of “Crematorium”. Since Victor understood that his new album would radically differ not only from the music of “Crematorium”, but also from the style of the first line-up of the group “Smoke”, he immediately warned the invited instrumentalists that his new project was focused on hard rock and progressive.
An intensive search for like-minded music began to yield results. The first was found leader guitarist Konstantin Latyshev, who immediately caught the spirit of Troegubov’s new hard rock compositions and embodied them in guitar riffs. A friend of Latyshev, Evgeni Polyakov, became the drummer. Soon, bass player Andrei Ustin appeared, who before that performed mainly rhythm and blues. From the first Smoke squad, apart from the Troegubs, only Sergey Pushkarev was involved, who this time took the place of the keyboard player. It was in this composition that the group began rehearsing, and in September 1994 recorded three hard rock songs. The recording confirmed the correctness of the musical style chosen by Troegubov. At the same time, it turned out that not all members of the group possess the professional level necessary for the performance of "heavy" music. The main claims were presented to the drummer, so at their first public appearance on November 18, 1994 at the legendary Moscow club Sexton, the Smoke group involved drummer of the first composition Alexander Solomatin. However, already in December 1994, a permanent drummer Alexander Dorofeev was found, who played his first concert on January 14, 1995. Somewhat later, in October 1995, Latyshev left the band, whose "bad habits" became an insurmountable obstacle to his musical activity. Grigory Moiseyev, who previously performed in the heavy metal band Rodmir, was invited to take the lead guitarist position. The group stabilized as part of Troegubov-Moiseev-Ustin-Pushkarev-Dorofeev, who continued to work on recording a studio album.
The Smoke group interrupted with rare performances and continued to record a studio album, which was completed in March 1996 and was named for its title track - The Dream Master.
Music critics praised this studio work. The 2001 Encyclopedia of Russian Pop and Rock Music reads:
... The disc, to the surprise of those who knew Troegubov’s past work, turned out to be hard rock, almost briskly malleable, in the spirit of Black Sabbath. Troegubov and comrades proved themselves as masters of heavy blues ...
;
“Small Encyclopedia. Russian rock ", publishing houses" LEAN "-" ANTO ", 2001:
... “Smoke” of the second convocation is trying to realize Troyegubov’s long-standing dream of recording a full-fledged “heavy” album, something intermediate between archaic hard rock and music is progressive ... In November 1996, the album “Dream Master” was released by Moroz Records. The album was highly appreciated by both the public and critics, since Troegubov again guessed the current trends of the time - hard rock. However, due to the chronic illnesses of the domestic show business and the refusal of the producers to support intellectual rock, the project for further development did not receive “Small Encyclopedia. Russian Rock”, “LEAN” Publishing House - “ANTAO”, 2001
After “Smoke” played concerts dedicated to the presentation of the album “Dream Master” and performed on several “live” radio broadcasts, in early 1997 Troegubov dismissed the group.
Smoke (2012 - present)
In 2012, Troegubov resumes musical activity and ends recording his third studio album , Simple Songs .
Literature and publishing
Back in 1990, the first official literary publications of Viktor Troegubov were published: a selection of poems in the almanac “Poetry”, as well as autobiographical notes “Innocent memoirs” about the “Crematorium” group in the cult journal “Counterculture”. In 1991, Troegubov’s selection of poems entered the anthology of rock poetry “Alternative,” where all the “classics” of the genre were presented.
After completing his musical activities with the Smoke band, Troegubov worked as a music journalist in the journal Rural Youth, weekly Vacancy, from January to June 1997. However, the short-term interests of periodicals are not attractive to Victor, and he begins work on several books about rock music.
In March 1999, the book "Legends of Russian Rock" was published at the publishing house "LEAN". Troegubov was the author of the project, wrote three chapters of eight (“Alexander Gradsky”, “Time Machine”, “Aquarium”).
In November 1999, the book of memoirs by Viktor Troegubov, "Life in and around Crematoria ..." was published, where he expressed his view on the history of the Crematorium group. The book contains an interview with two directors of the Crematorium group, Dmitry Brodkin and Sergey Khorushev.
In 2000, the book “ARIA: The Legend of the Dinosaur” was published. A brief history of its creation is as follows. In 1996-97, Dylan Troy wrote a book about the group "Aria", but the musicians of "Aria" blocked the book's output due to its extreme subjectivity. In 1999, Troegubov initiated and authored the processing of the Troy manuscript; materials included in the manuscript created by the author of most texts of the Aria group Margarita Pushkina were of great importance for the book.
In 2002, Troegubov became the producer of Margarita Pushkina’s book “Margarita’s Aria”, in which the author of most “Aryan” texts revealed the secrets of her author’s “kitchen” and presented to the public unpublished early versions of lyrics for the songs of the group “Aria”.
In 2002, the AVANTA + publishing house released the music encyclopedia Music of Our Days, in which Viktor Troegubov and Margarita Pushkina, who was involved with him, acted as scientific consultants. Troegubov wrote for this book the chapters “Rock and Roll” (co-authored with N. Maysuryan), “Hard Rock”, “Glam Rock”, “Rock in Russia”, as well as large review articles about Elton John, groups Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, and Slade.
Troegubov was the producer and literary editor of the books of Andrey Bespamyatny “LED ZEPPELIN” (2003), “JUDAS PRIEST” (2004) and “OZZY OSBOURNE” (2004, all - Nota-R publishing house), while Troegubov was the co-author of the last two books.
Troegubov also became a producer and literary editor of the Power & Speed Metal Encyclopedia (2004, Nota-R) and the Gothic & Doom Metal Encyclopedia (2006, Nota-R), authored by Igor Grachev.
