The station was opened on May 1, 1908. To the west of it, local paths turn into the express route of the Broadway and Seventh Avenue lines , and the express route into the Express route of the Lexington Avenue line . Both lines go to Manhattan through two different tunnels.

East of this station is the Eastern Parkway line, which forms the confluence of those two lines. At night, when part of express routes become local, the route 4 coming from Manhattan on Lexington Avenue line passes this and the next station via express routes and becomes local east since the connection of the routes is eliminated at the confluence point of the lines. ^[one]

The station is located on Fulton Mall, a small street in the center of Brooklyn, which is home to many banks and shops - one of which is Macy's . A few blocks away is the New York City Metro Museum .
