Biography
Born in Prussia in a family of Catholics. He studied German studies , philosophy and medicine at the Jensky and Göttingen universities . He began medical practice in Vienna.
In 1806 he came to Russia as a family doctor of the Repnin-Volkonsky family. In 1809 and 1810 he traveled around the Caucasus to study mineral springs (now the Caucasian Mineral Waters ). He investigated the sources in Kislovodsk , discovered the sources of Zheleznovodsk , was the first to report the sources in Essentuki (although he did not attach great importance to them) [2] . During the Patriotic War of 1812 he worked as a surgeon in the Russian army.
Since 1813, after a short trip to his homeland, he lived and worked in Moscow . In fact, he devoted his life to alleviating the fate of prisoners and exiles. He fought to improve the life of prisoners: he made sure that the elderly and the sick were freed from shackles; the abolition in Moscow of an iron rod, to which were riveted 12 exiles who were traveling to Siberia ; half-head shaving in women. On his initiative, a prison hospital and a school for children of prisoners were opened. Constantly took and supplied drugs to poor patients. He fought for the abolition of the right of landowners to exile serfs. All his savings went to charity.
For his charitable activities he was represented by the Moscow Governor D. S. Lansky to the Order of St. Vladimir, 4th class ; Haaz really appreciated this insignia and invariably wore it to death on his well-worn, but always neat tailcoat.
He was buried at the Vvedensky cemetery in Moscow; on his last journey he was escorted by a 20 thousandth crowd [3] .

In Fiction
In the novel “ Idiot ” by F. M. Dostoevsky, one of the characters tells the other about Haase (without naming him by name):
One old man lived in Moscow, one "general", that is, a real state councilor, with a German name; he had been wandering about prison and criminals all his life; each consignment to Siberia knew in advance that an "old general" would visit her on the Sparrow Hills. He did his work in the highest degree serious and pious; he appeared, walked through the ranks of exiles who surrounded him, stopped before everyone, asked everyone about his needs, almost never read the instructions to anyone, called them all “darlings”. He gave money, sent the necessary things - footcloths, envelopes, canvas, sometimes brought life-saving books and gave them each literate, with full conviction that they would read their way and that the literate would read to the illiterate. He rarely asked about a crime, did he listen if the criminal himself began to speak. All the criminals on his equal footing, there was no difference. He spoke to them as brothers, but they themselves began to consider him in the end for his father. If he noticed any exiled woman with a child in her arms, he came up, caressed the child, snapped his fingers so that he laughed. He did so for many years, until his death; it got to the point that he was known throughout Russia and throughout Siberia, that is, all criminals. One ex-Siberian one told me that he himself witnessed how the most inveterate criminals recalled the general, and meanwhile, when he visited parties, the general could rarely give out more than twenty kopecks to his brother.
