Zakhumlyans are a South Slavic Serbian [1] [2] [3] tribe that inhabited the Neretva River basin in the west of the Balkan Peninsula in the 8th – 11th centuries AD. The area of their settlement is called Zahumye .

Zahumlyans crossed the Balkan Mountains (where their name comes from, letters. Living behind the hill ) and populated the coast of the Adriatic Sea , gradually crowding out and assimilating the autochthonous Romanesque population. The main city of the zhumlyany became Ston . Seaside lands to the north of them were occupied by the Nrentans , to the south - by Trebidians , other Serbian tribes continued to live behind the ridge [5] [6] , and Bosnia [7] between the rivers Drina and Bosna. Over time, part of the zumlyumans adopted Catholicism and became part of the Croatian people .
