The flag of Lower Saxony is based on the flag of Germany . In the center of the black-red-yellow tricolor, having a 2: 3 aspect ratio, the coat of arms of Lower Saxony is placed. Lower Saxony uses the same flag both as a service flag and as a civil one, however, the sea service flag is slightly different from the main version and has a dovetail cut in the free part of the cloth.

History
The flag of Lower Saxony was introduced in May 1951 , and officially approved in 1952 . Before the Second World War, several territorial units existed in the territory of present Lower Saxony, each of which used its own symbols: Hanover , Braunschweig , Oldenburg and Schaumburg-Lippe . The historical flag of the Kingdom of Hanover from two horizontal stripes - yellow and white - with the emblem in the center was originally proposed as Lower Saxon, but the idea was not accepted by the inhabitants of historically non-Hanoverian territories, and the current version was developed and approved. Nevertheless, the coat of arms of Lower Saxony, placed on its flag, was at one time a symbol of both the Kingdom of Hanover and the free state of Braunschweig.
