The Archdiocese of Guatemala ( Latin: Archidioecesis Guatimalensis ) is the archdiocese of the Roman Catholic Church with a center in the city of Guatemala , Guatemala . The Archdiocese of Guatemala extends its jurisdiction to the departments of Guatemala and Zacatepeques . The Metropolitanate of Guatemala includes the dioceses of the dioceses of Verapas , Zacapa , Saint Rose of Lima , Jalapa , Escuintla and the territorial prelature of Santo Cristo de Esquipulas . The Cathedral of the Archdiocese of Guatemala is the Church of St. James . In the city of Antigua Guatemala is the co- cathedral of St. Joseph .

History
On December 18, 1534, the Holy See established the diocese of Guatemala, separating it from the diocese of Santo Domingo (today - the Archdiocese of Santo Domingo ). On the same day, the Diocese of Guatemala entered the Metropolitanate of Seville .
On February 12, 1546, the Diocese of Guatemala became part of the Metropolitanate of Mexico City .
On June 23, 1603, the territory of the abolished diocese of Verapas was included in the diocese of Guatemala. On December 16, 1743, Pope Benedict XIV issued the bull Ad supremum catholicae , which raised the diocese of Guatemala to the rank of archdiocese.
In the following years, the Archdiocese of Guatemala transferred part of its territory for the construction of new church structures:
- September 28, 1842 - Dioceses of San Salvador (today - Archdiocese of San Salvador);
- July 27, 1921 - Dioceses of Quetzaltenango-Los Altos (today - Archdiocese of Los Altos Quetzaltenango-Totonicapana ) and the Apostolic Vicariate of Verapas-Peten (today - Diocese of Verapas );
- March 10, 1951 - to the dioceses of Jalapa , Solola (today - Diocese of Solola-Chimaltenango ) and Sakapa ;
- May 9, 1969 - to the territorial prelature of Esquintles (today - Diocese of Esquintles );
- April 27, 1996 - dioceses of the Holy Rose of Lima .
On September 16, 1956 and June 24, 1986, the territorial prelature of Santo Cristo de Esquipulas was twice annexed to the Metropolitanate of Guatemala by the Act of Aeque principaliter .
