AppearanceBlack-headed siskin reaches lengths from 11 to 12 cm [2] . There is a pronounced sexual dimorphism .
In males, the head, neck and throat are black. The rest of the upper body is yellow with an olive green shade. Covering wings and tail blackish. Lower body yellow, chest in some individuals brownish. Bill and legs are blackish gray.
Females are much less contrasted. Their upper body and head are greenish gray. The lower part of the body is grayish-yellow, at the end of the body is lighter. Beak and legs somewhat paler than the male.
SpreadThe range extends from southern Argentina and Chile to southern Colombia and Venezuela. It inhabits flat and hilly landscapes. Birds live in tugai forests , forest edges, plantations, along the shrubby banks of rivers and roadsides, as well as in gardens and parks.
PowerThe black-headed siskin feeds mainly on seeds. Insects complement the diet.
ReproductionThe nest is built predominantly by the female. In laying from 3 to 4 eggs. Only female incubates. The nesting period is from 12 to 13 days. Young birds are able to fly at the age of about 18 days. After 10-14 days, they become independent.
