Ferdinand Gayden ( born Ferdinand Vandeveer Hayden ; September 7, 1829 - December 22, 1887 ) is an American geologist and traveler.

Biography
Ferdinand Gayden was born on September 7, 1829 in Westfield, Massachusetts .
A doctor by training, Hayden devoted himself entirely to geological and topographical studies of the upper reaches of the Missouri River (1853–56), the western territories of the United States of America , and the Rocky Mountains (1862, 1867 and 1873–78).
During the internecine war, Hayden served as a doctor in the army of the northerners , from 1865 to 1872 he was a professor of geology at the University of Pennsylvania .
Died December 22, 1887 in Philadelphia .
