Biography

Guillard was born in Hanwell (now one of the districts of London), Middlesex. He served as a cadet aboard the ship HMS Bacchante in 1881 .

He played in the international tennis arena from 1886 to 1914 .

At the Wimbledon tournament, he reached the finals in doubles twice ( 1889 and 1890 ). Both times, his partner was Ernest Lewis , and his rivals in the first final were brothers William and Ernest Renshaw. Also played twice in the quarter finals in singles (1889, 1897).

Twice he won the championship in Hamburg ( 1897 , 1900 ) and once played in the finals in Monte Carlo ( 1901 , a defeat in three sets from Reginald Doherty).

In 1908 he won a gold medal at the Summer Olympics in London, paired with Reginald Doherty . During the tournament, in the semifinal match against Clement Casalle and Charles Dixon, they had to play seven match balls in the 4th game and the final score of that match was 5-7, 2-6, 6-4, 17-15, 6-4. In the final against Josiah Ritchie and James Cecil Park, everything worked out in three games, although the fight was also very intense and the advantage was initially on the side of Ritchie and Park, who led in the first set of 5-2, but could not apply for the game.

From 1907 to 1925 he was secretary of the All-England club for lawn tennis and croquet and played an important role in the construction of the Central Court at Wimbledon .

He also played for Middlesex and Leicestershire in cricket tournaments from 1886 to 1896 . In addition, he had good results in golf, swimming , clay pigeon shooting and billiards .

On July 13, 1887 , at Greenford, he married Blanche Bingley , a six-time Wimbledon singles tournament champion. The couple lived in Thorpe, in Leicestershire, from 1895 to 1925, and then moved to Pulborough. The couple had two children: Jack and Marjorie.

When the war began, Guillard returned to the fleet and rose to the rank of commander.

George Gilliard died in Pulborough on Wednesday March 24, 1943 , at the age of 79.
