Biography

Nikolai Georgievich Tsyganov was born on May 10, 1909 in the village of Tolpino (now the Korenevsky district of the Kursk region) in a peasant family. He graduated from five classes.

Pre-war period

In 1927 he was drafted into the ranks of the Red Army .

In 1930, Nikolai Tsyganov graduated from the Leningrad Military Infantry School, after which he was appointed platoon commander of the 67th Infantry Regiment of the 23rd Infantry Division . Then he was appointed to the position of company commander, chief of staff of the regiment, chief of the second part of the staff of the division.

In 1941 he graduated from the Higher School of Staff Service.

World War II

Since July 1941, he participated in battles on the fronts of World War II. Since 1942 he joined the ranks of the CPSU (b) .

In February 1944, the colonel was appointed commander of the 11th Guards Rifle Division . In June 1944, N. G. Tsyganov was awarded the title of Major General .

With the end of the three-week battles, the 11th Guards Rifle Division went more than five hundred kilometers and reached the east coast of the Neman by July 13, 1944, and on July 14 the force crossed the river in the area of ​​the city of Alytus ( Lithuania ), where at the end of the battle it knocked out the enemy from the occupied them a milestone. Gypsies at that time was on the battlefield and led the crossing of the division. For four days, the enemy accepted attempts to counterattack the positions of the division, which, defending the occupied lines, soon launched an offensive.

On October 22, 1944, near the city of Gumbinnen (now the city of Gusev , Kaliningrad Region ), the enemy managed to repel the advance of the division and soon went on the counterattack. One of the enemy groups attacked the headquarters and rear of the division and the 2nd tank corps . On April 8, 1945, fighting was fought on the outskirts of Königsberg . In the center of the front line of the 11th Guards Army, an offensive was led by a division under the command of Tsyganov. The division in the area of ​​the railway freight station broke through the enemy’s defenses, went to the Pregel River and began forcing on the move.

By a decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of April 19, 1945, for the achieved military successes, skillful leadership of the troops during the crossing of the Neman and Pregel rivers, as well as in breaking through fortified lines in East Prussia, exceptional courage and heroism, Major General Tsyganov Nikolai Georgievich was awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union with the presentation of the Order of Lenin and the Gold Star medal (No. 5033).

Post-War Career

In 1948, with the graduation from the Academy of the General Staff, Tsyganov was appointed to the post of chief of staff of the Baltic Military District .

From 1955 he worked as deputy, from May 1963 to June 1968 - chief of the General Staff, first deputy commander in chief of the USSR Air Defense Forces.

In 1968, Tsyganov headed the Department of Air Defense of the Military Academy of the General Staff.

Colonel General Nikolai Georgievich Tsyganov died on May 12, 1970 in Moscow . He was buried at the Novodevichy cemetery (plot 7).

Memory

A river fishing vessel of the USSR Ministry of Fisheries was named after Tsyganov.
