Biography

Bassett Maguire was born in Alabama on August 4, 1904. [2] He was the son of Charles Thomas and Rose Bassett Maguire. [2]

Bassett enrolled in high school in Savannah, Georgia, and in the summer months of 1921–1923 was involved in commercial shipping as a seaman, sailor and quartermaster [2] .

In 1923, he entered the University of Georgia and three years later received a bachelor's degree with honors in botany and zoology [2] .

In 1927, Basset Maguire was appointed head of the Science Department at a secondary school in Georgia; realizing the need for graduate school, he received a teaching post as part-time assistant in botany at Cornell University in 1927 [2] . By 1931, Bassett completed the course requirements, but not his dissertation, when he was offered the post of assistant professor of botany at Utah State Agricultural College in Logan, Utah [2] . In Utah, he developed the Intermountain Herbarium and served as its main collector and curator until 1942 [2] .

In January 1943, Basset Maguire visited the New York Botanical Garden, where he was supposed to work on the flora of Utah [2] . By July, he was appointed curator, and then worked in the New York Botanical Garden in many positions: as curator ( 1943 - 1958 ), chief curator ( 1958 - 1961 ), assistant director ( 1968 - 1969 ), senior researcher ( 1972 - 1974 ) and honorary senior researcher since 1975 [2] .

While working in the garden, his studies began to move from North America to tropical America; in 1944, he arranged an expedition to the Kayetur slope [2] .

Maguire continued to organize expeditions to South America , especially in the Amazon lowlands [2] . In 1954, Bassett discovered the mountain Cerro de la Neblin and gave it a name [3] . He was an organizer and a participant in three subsequent trips to the Cerro de la Neblin mountain; in 1965, Bassett was awarded the David Livingstone Centenary Medal [2] [3] .

Bassett Maguire was an inspirational teacher for a whole generation of nerds [2] . He made a significant contribution to botany, describing many plant species [4] .

Basset Maguire died in Manhattan from renal failure [3] on February 6, 1991 [2] at the age of 86 [2] [3] .
