6.5 cm long zebra-shaped dascil. On a tall, white body there are three wide black transverse stripes extending from the base of the dorsal fin through the head to the throat, from the middle of the dorsal fin to the black abdominal fins and from the back of the dorsal fin to the anal fin. The caudal fin is white. Along the sideline organ there are from 15 to 19 scales.
The zebra-shaped dascil lives in lagoons and coastal coral reefs in the Red Sea, in the tropical Indo-Pacific region , north to southern Japan and south to Sydney. The line, conditionally drawn from the Line Islands through the Marquesas Islands to the Tuamotu Archipelago , forms the eastern boundary of the range.
Fish live in large schools in corals of the genus Acropora or in smaller groups on isolated corals outside the main reef. They feed on zooplankton, small bottom invertebrates and algae.
