History

Moscow Aviation

On the initiative of Professor N.E. Zhukovsky , the Moscow Aviation Technical School was created in 1919 , from which the renowned military educational institution traces its history. Initially, classes were held in a building on Voznesenskaya Street (Radio Street), and in May 1920 the building was a former vocational school in Maly Kozlovsky Lane, in the center of Moscow, but far from the airfield .

Institute of Red Air Fleet Engineers

On September 26, 1920, the Revolutionary Military Council of the Republic issued Order No. 1946, in which it decided to reorganize the Moscow Aviation Technical School into the N.E. Zhukovsky Institute of Engineers of the Red Air Fleet . The regulations on the institute were approved by the Revolutionary Military Council on November 23, 1920.

Academy of the Air Fleet named after N.E. Zhukovsky

On September 9, 1922, an order was issued by the Revolutionary Military Council of the Republic on the introduction of the new staff of the institute with the name of the Academy of the Air Fleet named after N. Ye. Zhukovsky.

In the summer of 1923, the Academy moved to the Petrovsky Palace and to the premises of the former Skalkin restaurant near the Khodynsky airfield , which significantly affected the improvement of the educational process.

Air Force Academy of the Red Army

On April 17, 1925, the Academy was renamed the Air Force Academy of the Red Army named after Professor N. E. Zhukovsky. In the first years of its existence, the academy had two faculties: engineering and the Air Fleet services (command, which lasted until 1927 and was reopened in 1930 ). January 29, 1927 the first graduation of students of the command faculty.

In the 30s , in addition to the two existing faculties, four more were added: aviation weapons ( 1934 ), operational ( 1935 ; worked for 2 years and reopened in 1939 ), correspondence courses ( 1937 ), navigational ( 1938 ).

Until 1940, the Academy remained the only higher military educational institution in the country that trained commanders for the Air Force, general engineers capable of working in the army , industry, and research institutions. Its graduates commanded aircraft parts and formations, led the engineering and aviation service , and headed design bureaus, aircraft factories, and research institutions.

Military Academy of the Command and Navigation Staff of the Red Army Air Force

In March 1940, on the basis of command, navigational, operational faculties and advanced training courses for commanding officers, the Military Academy of the command and navigational staff of the Air Force of the Red Army (later the Air Force Academy named after Yu. A. Gagarin ) was created. After that, the Academy prepared only the engineering staff for the Air Force.

With the outbreak of war, the Academy began to be equipped with senior students of universities and higher educational institutions of the country, which allowed to reduce the training time. For the retraining of flight, navigational and technical personnel for the new military equipment at the Academy, a training center was created, which in the first months of the war retrained more than 5 thousand people.

From July 1941 to June 1943 the Academy was in Sverdlovsk . During the Great Patriotic War, academy scientists were engaged in improving the reliability and efficiency of the combat use of aircraft , improving their flight performance, substantiating the rational designs of small arms and cannon weapons, and research on increasing the accuracy of aerial shooting and bombing. The results of these studies had a significant impact on the development of military aviation equipment, the organization of the engineering and aviation service of the Air Force, and the effectiveness of engineering and aviation support for combat operations of Soviet aviation. Important studies were conducted related to the creation of jet engines and more advanced aerodynamic layouts of aircraft, as well as the foundations of aerodynamic calculation and design of high-speed aircraft, the theory of stability, controllability and maneuverability of aircraft at high flight speeds. In total, over the years of the war, 672 research works were performed.
