Park History
On April 2 (April 14), 1806, on the proposal of the Taganrog mayor Baron B. B. Campenhausen , permission was obtained to create a Pharmacy Garden in the city [1] . On June 30, 1806, the surveyor of Rostov County, engineer Sharzhinsky, presented a garden plan, part of which was reserved for pharmacy plantations, and another for planting fruit and ornamental trees and vineyards. In summer and autumn, earthworks were carried out, for which prison prisoners were used. Plantations, several alleys and paths were planned, wells were dug, rooms for watchmen and tool storage were built, the first plantings were carried out [1] .
A.P. Chekhov in 1887 wrote about the garden in a letter to his sister: “ I was in the garden. The music was playing. The garden is magnificent. The circle is chock full . ” He wrote about the Chekhov garden in several of his works. In 1909, the garden was completely cut down and planted with new trees. In 1934, the garden became a park, and it was named after A.M. Gorky . The park was awarded the title "Best Park of Culture and Rest" several times.
In 2008, the “Reconstruction and Improvement Plan” developed by DonProjectRestoration was adopted, which included, among other things, the construction of a rollerdrome in the back of the park [2] . In October 2012, a mobile dolphinarium of the Voronezh Oceanarium toured Gorky Park [3] . In July 2014, the park's administration brewed a park gate overlooking Kanatnaya Street [2] . This decision was motivated by the behavior of residents of the surrounding areas, throwing garbage into the park [2] .
Chess Pavilion
For the first time, the chess and checker pavilion began to work in the park in May 1928, representing one of the terraces of the one-story reading pavilion, built in 1927 [4] . In 1992, the pavilion was rebuilt and given over to the cafe. On August 4, 2012, the building was reconstructed and inaugurated as a chess pavilion [4] . The opening ceremony was attended by Russian Deputy Prime Minister A. V. Dvorkovich and Rostov Region Governor V. Golubev [4] . At the opening ceremony, V. Golubev proposed to organize a chess tournament for the Governor's Cup in this pavilion next fall [4] .
After the reconstruction of the Chess Pavilion, art and photo exhibitions are also held [3] .
