History
The cathedral was built in 1812 on the site of a wooden church by the efforts of the Greek community living in the city. The wooden church was built in 1766; a priest chosen by the community performed services in Greek. The temple was first consecrated in honor of the Equal-to-the-Apostles Tsar Constantine, later it was renamed in honor of the Vladimir Icon of the Mother of God. The bell tower was built in 1828 . [1] It is noteworthy that in the metric books of the cathedral there is evidence that the famous Field Marshal Mikhail Kutuzov , who was in the city at that time, baptized his two children in the 1789 and 1790s. In 1790, the territory of the cathedral was buried Kutuzov’s son Nikolai, who died in childhood from smallpox.
In 1905 the cathedral was restored, some paintings of that time have survived to the present day. In 1944 , when the Assumption Church was closed, the cathedral received the status of a cathedral. It is noteworthy that for the entire time of its existence, neither during the Soviet period, nor during the Nazi occupation, the cathedral was not closed by the authorities. In the 1980s, under the leadership of Bishop Sevastian , a large-scale restoration was carried out, new paintings were updated and created.
Since 2011, the rector of the cathedral is the ruling bishop of the Kirovograd and Novomirgorod diocese, Archbishop Joasaph (Guben) . Archpriest Vladimir Kashlyuk, clergyman of the diocese, was placed in charge of the church.
Shrines
There are several notable icons in the cathedral. This is, first of all, the icon of the blessed Daniel of Elizabeth, the first canonized saint in the Kirovograd diocese. There are icons recently painted and brought from the Holy Mount Athos , among which there is a list of the icon of the Mother of God, called Pantanassa (“The Tsaritsa”) . Also in the temple there is a locally revered icon of the Virgin "Elisavetgrad". Icons of the 19th century are especially worth mentioning, among them is the list of the Icon of the Mother of God “Yeletskaya-Chernigovskaya” with the signature below: “In memory of saving the life of the Sovereign Emperor Alexander II” and “from students of the Zlatopol gymnasium on 5/2/1880”
