Barbara Cook ( born October 25, 1927 - August 8, 2017 ) is an American singer and actress, winner of the Tony , Grammy , and Drama Desk awards, which has achieved wide acclaim for her performances in Broadway musicals .

Cook began her career in the fifties in the original versions of the productions of Candide (1956) and The Music Man (1957), and after that she continued to be one of the leading actresses on stage. She also performed in the cable and gave solo concerts. In 2011, she was inducted into the Kennedy Hall of Fame. [6]

She died of respiratory failure in her home in Manhattan on August 8, 2017 at the age of 89. [7] The next day, August 9, the lights of Broadway theaters were turned off for one minute in tribute to Barbara Cook. [eight]
