The area of the island is 0.375 km² . The island has the largest sewage treatment plant in Europe [1] [2] .

History

In 480 BC e. the island of Psitalia played an important role in the battle of the Greeks with the Persians at Salamis . On the eve of the battle, 400 Persian soldiers were landed on the island, but Aristide, at the head of a detachment of hoplites, captured the island and made it the bridgehead of the Greeks. During the battle, the Greek detachment destroyed or captured Persian soldiers escaping from sinking ships [3] .

In the Middle Ages and until recently, the island was called Lipsokutali [4] ( Λειψοκουτάλι - lit. half-spoon ), since it resembles half a spoon when viewed from the nearby Mount Egaleo .

In the middle of the 20th century, a prison of the Naval Forces of Greece was located on Psitalia [5] .

Thus, part of the island is a historical monument and is protected by the state. The rest in 1990 was used for the construction of a treatment plant.
