Sports career
In 1982, 18-year-old Francisco Masiel held his first matches for the Mexican national team in the Davis Cup , having suffered four defeats in four games with rivals from Australia and Romania . Only in 1984, he achieved the first victory in the framework of this tournament. His first serious successes in individual tournaments came this year: in April he won the ATP Challenger tournament in San Luis Potosiv in doubles, in June he repeated this success in Dortmund already in singles, and two months later he took part in the Olympic Games tournament in Los Angeles , which was attended by players aged not older than 20 years. Having defeated Emilio Sanchez and Jacob Hlasek in the early stages, the unseeded Masiel reached the finals, where he was stopped by 18-year-old Stefan Edberg .
1985 was marked for Masiel significant success in the Davis Cup. His victories in matches with the national teams of Peru, Canada and Brazil allowed the Mexicans to win the American group and enter the World Group - the highest echelon of this competition. 1986 saw the peak of Masiel's individual career. In May, he entered the fourth round of the French Open , and in June he first reached the semifinals of the Grand Prix tournament in Bologna , and then in Athens he reached the first and only career finals of the Grand Prix tournament. After that, he rose in the ranking to 35th place - the highest in his career. The following month, as part of the Davis Cup match against the US national team, Masiel brought the only point to the Mexican team, defeating Tim Mayotte , the tenth racket of the world at that time. Toward the end of the year, he once again reached the semifinals in the Grand Prix tournament, this time in Brazil.
In the future, however, Masiel failed to build on the success of 1986. By the end of the next season, he left not only the first, but also the second hundred of the rating. In 1988, he was admitted to the Olympic tennis tournament in Seoul , but dropped out of the fight in the first round. He almost completely missed the year 1989 , and even winning the last in the career of the Challenger in Mexico City in April 1990 only allowed him to move from the fifth hundred to the third. He also held his last single Challenger finals in Mexico City exactly one year after that. A year later, he last visited the final of the Challenger in doubles and after losing to Jacob Hlasek in the first round of the Olympic Games in Barcelona, he ended his playing career at 28 years old.
Subsequently, Francisco Masiel served as chairman of the Mexican Tennis Federation. He remained in this post for two terms, for eight years until 2008 [1] .
