DescriptionThe British squadron under the command of Admiral Hyde Parker Sr. consisted of seven battleships and several smaller ones, the same number were part of the Dutch one under the command of Vice Admiral Johan Zutman (one of the Dutch ships was commanded by Admiral Kinsbergen, famous for his Russian service). Both squadrons came with convoys of merchant ships. At the convoys were: from the British side 2 frigates and 5 sloops and cutters, from the Dutch side 2 frigates and 2 small ships. They did not take part in the battle.
SummaryAfter a heavy and bloody battle, the squadrons dispersed each to its own port. Admiral Parker on his return stated that his ships were not properly equipped for battle, and resigned. In the Netherlands, the battle was considered to be won, Admiral Kinsbergen was awarded the title of Earl of Doggerbank 25 years later, but in fact, after this battle, the Dutch warships no longer risked going to sea.
