“ Capitanes de Arecibo ” is a professional basketball club at Baloncesto Superior Nacional Puerto Rico National Basketball Super League. In 2010, the team played in the Premier League Basketball speaking under the title "Capitanes de Puerto Rico".

National Basketball Super League
The club appeared in 1946 under the direction of coaches Wilfredo Franco, Tingo Diaz and Piro Mendes to prepare for the Olympic Games. The group of young athletes, mostly from Arecibo , such as Manuel Gilberto (Petaca) Iguina, Quicón Iguina, Abdiel de la Rosa, Alberto Rentas, Joaquin Balaguer, Armando Villamil and Pipa Benikes, who became part of the team and leading athletes in Puerto, performed well. Rico, finishing second in the qualifying match.
On August 19, 1959, Capitanes won their first basketball championship in a match against Rio Pedras Cardenals at the stadium Luis Rodriguez Olmo in Arecibo. Club coach at the time was Lou Roscini, and in the series of games, Francisco Pancho Padilla, Felipito Colon, Bill McCadney, Jose (Fufi) Santori Coll, Moises Nagedo, Jose Rodriguez Gomez, Eddie Martinez, Jose Vásque, Josede Apond Morales, Jaime Miranda, Joe Philip Padilla Oyo, Ramon Siracusa, Enrique Miranda and Sitin Garcia.
In 1992, under the leadership of coach Alfred "Butch" Lee, "Capitanes" again reached the final of the national basketball super league with such elite players as Ferdinand Morales, Rafael Hernandez, Giovanni Colon, Fitz Roy Brow, Juan Grailes, Orlando Febres, Bryan and Marc Santiago, losing in a difficult series of matches against the club Ponce Lions.
Club reorganization
In 2002, contrary to media forecasts and basketball analysts, Capitanes reached the semifinals in the Game 7 series of games with such young talents as Giovanni Jimenez, Rick Epodaca, Buster Figueroa, Peichi Cruz and David Cortes, as well as veterans Felix Xavier Peres , Xavier Rolon and Oscar Chiaramello.
In 2005, club owner Regino Babilonia hired Carlos Mario Rivera as head coach and Capitanes again won the Super League Championship with a score of 4-0 against Bayamón Cowboys .
In 2007, with captain David Rosario and players Rafael Paci Cruz, Angel Baster Figueroa, David Cortes, Carlos Payano and Marcus Fitzer, Capitanes reached the final of the super league. It was a historic game within the Games series with a sell-out at the Jose Miguel Agrelot Coliseum Stadium, where 3/4 of the fans present were from Captain Correa City. “Capitanes de Arecibo” due to the extra time returned the missing 20 points, the deficit of which they had the last quarter. In the persistent and emotional series of games, "Captain's" showed a result a little less good than in the other championship.
During the 2008 season, Capitanes reached the final against the Carolina Giants club. In a series of seven games, each team won three home matches. [1] “Capitanes de Arecibo” won in the seventh match with a score of 99–94, it was their third championship won in the history of its existence. [2] According to the results of the matches, Ángel Figueroa was chosen as the best player .
