The station was opened on October 27, 1904 as part of the first phase of the Interborough Rapid Transit Company (IRT) network. At this time, trains ran from City Hall Station to 145th Street .
The station is named after the nearby Astor Place, which in turn is named after John Astor , who acquired his fortune from the beaver skin trade. Therefore, at the station there is a cartouche with the image of a beaver . The underground floor of the Kmart network shop goes to the south direction platform, outside the turnstiles.
