The red-eyed taui is 23 cm long. The sides are red-brown, the belly is white, the long dark tail with white edges. Eye color is generally red, only in the southeast population it is white. The color of the head, upper body and tail of the male is black, and that of the female is brown.
The red-eyed taui lives in open fields, thickets, on the fringes of a bush and forest from southern Canada through the United States to Mexico. Northern populations spend the winter in southern North America.
The bird raises leaves on the ground in search of insects, spiders and fruits.
The female alone builds a cup-shaped nest from branches and grass on the ground or between the lower branches of the bush. In the clutch from 2 to 6 eggs, the hatching of which lasts about 2 weeks. Both birds feed the chicks for 2 weeks. Young birds remain with their parents until the end of summer.
