History

Passau was founded by the Celts, served as a fortification in the Roman period. At the beginning of the VIII century the city was the residence of the Bavarian Duke Theobald , from 739 and for a thousand years Passau was the capital of the eponymous bishopric of the Holy Roman Empire . As the city grows, in the XII , XIV and XV centuries. there were uprisings against the authority of the bishops [3] . In 1552, the Passau Treaty was concluded between Ferdinand I , representing the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V , and Protestant princes, led by Elector Moritz of Saxony . On the basis of this agreement, the right to profess Lutheranism was recognized, an amnesty was declared for the leaders of the Schmalkalden Union . The treaty was the basis of the Augsburg religious world 1555 [4] . During the First Silesian War, the Bavarians, having captured the fortress of Passau, were forced to surrender it to the Austrians, who occupied it until 1745 [3] .
