Trevor Powers ( born Trevor Powers ; March 18, 1989 , San Diego , California , USA ) is an American singer and multi-instrumentalist playing under the pseudonym Youth Lagoon . By his own admission, he was influenced by the music of Cocteau Twins , especially their album Treasure [1] .

Biography and career
Powers was born in San Diego and raised in Boise. [2] In 2010, he studied English literature [3] at Boise State University , and between classes he composed songs and attended a music school [4] . In January 2011, during the winter holidays, he recorded material for a future album at his friend’s home studio [5] , sound engineer Jeremy Park [6], and in May 2011 [4] published the single “July” on Bandcamp [1] . The song received the title of best new track on the Pitchfork website [7] , and soon the musician signed a contract for two albums with the record label Fat Possum [4] . The debut album The Year of Hibernation was released on September 27, 2011 [7] . In the same month, Youth Lagoon quit university and worked at Urban Outfitters , deciding to seriously study music, and went on his first concert tour with guitarist Logan Hyde [3] .
The Year of Hibernation received positive reviews from critics [8] and finished eighth in the Top Heatseekers chart [9] . He entered the list of the best albums of the year according to the Pitchfork Internet portal [10] , which also noted the video clip for the Montana song, shot by director Tyler T. Williams [11] .
In 2012 he toured North America with Smith Westerns and Porcelain Raft [12] .
On March 5, 2013, the second full-length release Wondrous Bughouse was released on the same Fat Possum label, the album received positive reviews from critics. Pitchfork ranked him Best New Music with a rating of 8.7 [13] .
